Full Text

W. C. Gaston, upon the whole made quite a popular speech at Morristown--among the Democracy. He is a very smooth orator, can tell a good anecdote and apply it well, but we appeal to his own friends if there was much ballast in his speech. His statements were not always in accordance with the truth, as for instance, he said that Giddings was the Chairman of the Committee that framed the Republican State Platform, and was the Chairman of the State Executive Committee. Wrong in both as the record shows. His whole speech was built upon the false hypothesis that the Republican party was in favor of open violation of law, when that law conflicted with their pleasure, and that the party considered it unconstitutional. He complained bitterly of the course of the Republican Committee in allowing Corwin to speak through the Southern part of the State, as though they had not a right to do as they pleased. He made a strong Douglas speech after the Douglas fashion, reasoning always from false premises. He closed by giving the Americans a rap for fusing with the Republicans in the county, and evidently thought to scare them into the support of the Democratic ticket. His was the big speech of the day.
