AN EXPEDIENT.—An attempt to mingle political with religious prejudices, is justly regarded as unworthy of any, except the most unprincipled men. The partisans of Crawford, in this state, [Maine] are now in so desperate a condition that they stick at nothing which can in any way promote their cause; and therefore we are not surprised at their unceasing endeavors to persuade the Baptists that he is a member of their communion. This trick, however, is too shallow to serve them. Even were he a most exemplary member of the Baptist communion, we believe there is too much good sense prevailing among that respectable portion of the community to give him their preference exclusively on account of his religious creed. There are none who more sincerely deprecate "a union of church and state," than do the Baptists.—We think the friends of Mr. Crawford had better remain silent, respecting his religious character; because, it judged on the principle that "the tree is known by its fruit," he would hardly be considered an honor to any religious society. We cannot believe the Baptists, generally, will give their support to a man who has repeatedly set at defiance the laws of God and his country, even though he profess himself to be of their faith. A murderer and a duellist cannot be a very worthy member of any society.
