This Golfer Wastes No Time On Getting Started
FORT WORTH, Jan 22-(UP)-
The plane droned over lush Colonial Hills golf course where next June the nation's finest golfers will vie for America's top honors in the national open.
Soon the shiny bundle of powered metal dropped down, missed a gaunt pecan tree and eluded a sand trap on the Number One fairway. When it had landed, lanky Leon Taylor of Mexia stepped out, dressed for golf, carrying his sticks.
He rolled his plane under a tree and leisurely walked to the first tee. To his friends he explained that he left Mexia an hour earlier bent on playing in the weekly pro-amateur sweepstakes.
'It would have taken me fully an hour to drive to and from the airport, 12 miles away,' he said.
Taylor shot an 85 and then walked back to his plane. To his caddy—as if asking what club to use—he said,
'I better use the number 6 fairway.'
Down the fairway he taxied, head into the stiff wind, and the golfer was gone.
Taylor has been flying four months and previously had landed on golf courses in Waxahachie and other cities in the state. He is an oil man.
