GEN. JACKSON.

The conduct of Gen. Jackson, in imprisoning Col. Callava, and in his measures towards Judge Fromentin, continues to excite much interest. With here and there an exception, it is spoken of as it ought to be in this land of law and liberty. It was said that Judge Fromentin had acknowledged his error in issuing the writ of Habeas Corpus, and had apologized to Gen. Jackson. Some surprise was naturally felt at this supposed degradation of a Judge of the United States, who had so far forgot himself, the authority of his office, and the dignity of the Government by which he was commissioned, as to make such an acknowledgment. It seems, however, that this report was unfounded, and a serious controversy has arisen between him and Gen. Jackson, in consequence of the latter's having given countenance to the report. It is much to be hoped that the Government will interfere in season to rescue our national character from the reproach which such conduct as that of Gen. Jackson is likely to bring upon it.
