General B. H. Grover, commanding the department of Arizona, in his annual report, as in previous reports, recommends that Fort Selden be garrisoned by a full company instead of a detachment as at present, until such time as it can be permanently enlarged. His report says: "The present military reservation at Fort Selden, N. M., contains about 10,000 acres, and could in case of necessity be enlarged as desired by the addition of lands adjoining, owned by the government. The post was some years ago abandoned and subsequently reoccupied. It should in my judgment be held permanently and garrisoned by one troop of cavalry, or infantry, to preserve and keep in order the government buildings and lands until such time as it can be utilized for a large military establishment."
