The quarterly meeting of the Alaska World War II Veterans Board scheduled for September 26, has been indefinitely postponed due to the Territory's lack of ready cash, the Empire has been informed.
John Hellenthal of Anchorage, chairman, estimated that the cancellation would save the Territory about $3,000, the cost of the session at Juneau with representatives from the four Alaska divisions. He quotes all members are agreeable to the change, and expressed the hope of transacting all the work of the board by mail.
According to Hellenthal, the board could finance the meeting cut by its cancellation, that money can be used for veterans' loans and bonuses. Expenses normally would come out of monthly payments from the Territorial Treasury, but those funds were frozen in June.
Besides Chairman Hellenthal, board members are Robert Ellis, mayor of Ketchikan; L. Embert Demmert of Craig, and Roland H. Brousseau of Nome. No appointment has been made to fill the Fourth Division vacancy created by the resignation of Paul Solka, Fairbanks, who resigned to take a federal position in the Bureau of Census.
