Full Text

Increase of Population in Butte County.—The late election shows an increase of voters in this county since last year of 1586, which we believe is larger than the increase exhibited by any county in the State, and comes within ten votes of doubling the number cast last year. These thirty-two hundred voters have one Representative in the Assembly. The counties of Butte and Plumas, which together cast over five thousand votes, have one Senator. It is not unreasonable to presume that Butte county will cast over 4000 votes another year. Counties with from five to seven hundred voters, have a member of Assembly, while Butte and Plumas with over 5000 voters have but three. Yuba County casts less than 3000 votes, has five Assemblymen, and Yuba and Sutter together have three Senators. And we might enumerate further to show the inequality of the present representation of the State, and the manifest injustice to many of the northern mining counties. We merely call attention to it, hoping that the Know Eye legislature, after they have purified the ballot box by the passage of a registration act, may devise means to equalize our representation.

Event Details

The late election shows an increase of voters in Butte County of 1586 since last year, nearly doubling the previous number. These 3200 voters have one Representative in the Assembly. Butte and Plumas, with over 5000 votes, have one Senator. Smaller counties like those with 500-700 voters have an Assembly member, while Yuba (under 3000 votes) has five Assemblymen and Yuba and Sutter have three Senators. This highlights inequality in state representation, especially for northern mining counties.
