Rev. C. W. Reese and Rev. D. E. Biederwolf of Alton have received letters warning them to "leave town while the leaving is good," according to statements they made yesterday to members of their congregations.
Mr. Reese recently led a morality movement in which were obtained the indictment and conviction of several Alton men on the charge of gambling.
The letter stated his days are numbered. He said he would ignore the warning. The letter was signed, "One of 240 Who Will Stand Pat."
Mr. Biederwolf was warned to leave town by last night, with the explanation that no one would know why he went if he kept the letter a secret. He read the letter before a large audience in the Tabernacle at Alton.
Intense excitement prevails among the antivice crusaders in Alton as a result of these letters.
Mr. Reese, who is the pastor of the Unitarian church of Alton, was beaten the night of December 17 in Mitchell, Ill., by a gang of men. The men were not identified. It was through the efforts of Messrs. Reese and Biederwolf that the Madison County grand jury of Edwardsville returned indictments against twelve alleged gamblers.
