Mrs. L. Gillam Guest At Carver School PTA
The patrons and friends of Carver school PTA enjoyed a Halloween program at their second meeting of the year. The program consisted of a Halloween skit and several songs by the fifth grade class. Principal A. A. Arnold introduced the honored guest and speaker, Mrs. Lydia Gillam, who spoke on "The Growth of the Community". Mrs. Gillam worked with the first principal of the school, Mrs. Cassie Hollingsworth, more than 25 years ago. She succeeded Mrs. Hollingsworth and served as principal for 20 years. She told of the growth she observed since she first came to the community. She stated that only those who know where we came from can really appreciate where we are. She praised the beautiful buildings and warned that buildings alone do not make schools but the personality of those who grace the walls. She stated, "The buildings are long over-due, but since we have them let us not stand still because a complacent people are not progressive". Dr. Scarlett, city health physician, made a short talk to the parents. Nurse Turner, school nurse, was introduced and made remarks. Mrs. Margaret Bowman, president, reported that much progress had been made in collecting money to improve the streets around the school. The meeting was very interesting. Mesdames M. B. Vault and E. L. Peyton were hostesses. Mrs. D. B. Matthis, reporter.
