THE EDITORS

Charleston, 25th Sept. 1813.

Gentlemen,

In your paper, of the 14th instant you republished a paragraph from the Investigator of this city, of the 4th instant, reflecting on my conduct, as District Attorney.

At the time, you so republished the said paragraph, you probably thought it was true; but, as the fact is otherwise, and as I have this day inclosed to the Comptroller of the Treasury letters from commodore Dent, and collector Theus, proving; "that the case of the Caroline had never been in any manner submitted to me," I hope you will have no objection to remedy the mischief you have done me, as far as now remains in your power.

Inclosed, I send you the Investigator of the 7th instant, in which you will see some explanation of the above case. With that explanation, I have had no concern: but it appears thereby, that the Editors of that paper had discovered, that the "proper officers," had some reason for their conduct, and therefore were willing to do them as much justice, as was then in their power.

I am, Gentlemen,

Your Humble Servant,

THOMAS PARKER,

District Attorney.

From the Investigator of Sept. 7th.

"We are happy to have it in our power to put the blame where it ought to rest, with regard to the ship Caroline, said to be loaded here by Magrath and Jones—this ship in our opinion ought to have been stopped. We still think she ought to have been stopped, but are happy to state, the proper officers whose duty it was to have done it, were not armed with authority for that purpose.

"The circular we have seen will prove that the act prohibiting the use of licences was not received here until the 28th of August, although it was approved August 2d."
