Started less than a year ago, the dedication of the new Yakutat army air field recently was a tribute to the efficiency of army engineers in charge of the work.
Governor Gruening said upon his return from the opening ceremonies.
"I was greatly impressed with the speed and efficiency with which this field was completed." Governor Gruening declared. "It is a major demonstration of the efficiency of army engineers."
"The new Yakutat air base," the Governor continued, "provides Alaska with a splendid airfield, not only for military purposes, but commercially it will furnish an important link in a coastwise air service which I hope to see established in the near future. This service would enable people of Southeast Alaska to travel to Cordova, Valdez, Anchorage or Seward without flying first into Fairbanks, which is so much out of their way."
