[From the Pittsburgh Journal of Saturday.]

The Virginia Election.

Next Thursday the "mother of States" is to elect a Governor, Lieut. Governor, members of Congress, Legislature, &c. It seems like madness to say any one supposes that there is any doubt about a Virginia election. The Democracy have so long ruled things their own way that even South Carolina is not more stable. The curious phase of the question is that each party is trying to out bluff his opponent in devotion to the peculiar institution in that State. But by far the most curious is that each one is actively circulating what they call abolition documents. Goggin's friends are spreading wide cast the Ruffner pamphlet to show Letcher's approval of the declaration that "slavery is a curse more destructive than war, pestilence, black vomit and yellow fever." Letcher, who is unwell, has become alarmed, and has issued an address in which he recants all his abolition heresies, and also quotes from the leading Virginia statesmen a great variety of similar sentiments. The novelty of the whole thing is that for any Northern man to speak, or even to circulate such sentiments in that State would ensure a coat of tar and feathers, probably even worse, but all the active politicians in the State are now circulating such documents. The seed thus sown in the soil of Virginia cannot long continue without bringing forth fruit. Just think of it—all the politicians in Virginia engaged in circulating incendiary documents!!!

Event Details

Upcoming election for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Congress members, and Legislature. Both parties compete in devotion to slavery by circulating abolition documents; Goggin's supporters spread Ruffner pamphlet criticizing Letcher's past views on slavery as a curse; Letcher recants heresies and quotes Virginia statesmen with similar sentiments. Irony noted that such actions by Northerners would lead to severe punishment, yet politicians do so freely. Predicted to sow seeds of change.
