Communications.

On noisome weeds when lilies blow,
And hyacinths on nettles grow;
When briers yield the camphor gum,
And sweets from gall and wormwood run;
When hatred flows in tears of love,
And hawks and kites protect the dove;
When foxes shall the brood defend,
And sheep secure by wolves be penned;
When scorpions' stings shall comfort give
And palms make the dying live;
When sin shall cleanse poor man deceased,
And lies with truth be reconciled;
When darkest cells shall light afford,
And wrath pronounce a peaceful word;
When kings for equal rights contend,
And Tyrants shall the slave defend;
Then Britain and her party bere,
Shall Washington love and revere

Mr Weeks,

I am a federalist, that is, a friend to the federal constitution and government, and an honest disciple of Washington. I say an honest disciple, I do not say that I can comprehend and divine all the science which that great political master knew and taught in his school; but I believe in his general system of politics as I understand it, and therefore claim the right of being denominated a Washingtonian federalist. Will you on this account, deny me a place in your Gazette? Will you print nothing except it be written by democrats? Well then, I say truly & honestly, I am a democrat that is, I am a friend to our democratic federal constitution and government Now may not all this be true? Who will pretend that our federal government is not a government of the people? and who does not know that a government of the people is a democracy? Or who will pretend that genuine federalism,or Washingtonian federalism is not both of a federal and a democratic character?

The Washingtonian policy guarantees the democratical State governments inviolable, and of these States, combined in a federal Union, forms a federal democracy of the whole, This being the true state of facts, where is the propriety of this distinction between federalists and democrats? There is not a single Washingtonian federalist in our country nor in the world who is not a democrat.

If there be any who pretend to be democrats who will not acknowledge themselves to be federalists, let them state their reasons and attend to a discussion of the subject Or if there be any who profess to be federalists who will not acknowledge themselves to be democrats, let them state their reasons and attend to a discussion of the subject. Let this be attended to with candour, and let the subject be canvassed with ability and the common people will receive more light and probable knowledge than they can receive from any abuse which party spirit is disposed to maintain or support.
