Mr. Printer, please to insert the following in your Paper, and you will oblige some of your Readers as much as you did the Public in stopping the Press May 30, 1765, to publish the Performance of Mr. Joseph Cotton against Mr. Robert Sandeman in behalf of a Church.
Said Performance they say, "We have heard how Mr. Sandeman has built his Church in Portsmouth; and it appears to us, that it is built short of the true Foundation. - And we look upon him as one of those we read of in the 2d Cor. 11.13. 14. -- 2d of Tim. 3. 8. 9. & Jude 18, 19." It may be the Members of said Church are such as are called Second Sighted Persons, and so see what others can't see, nor learn from Scripture. They mention no Particulars against Mr. Sandeman, so that others may judge by his Practice whether the Scriptures they mention, can more properly be applied to him than to them. And it is agreeable to their Practice to judge by their own Infallibility rather than by Scripture: Since Mr. Drowne built his Church in Portsmouth, they have followed him in Opposition to Scripture, and therefore can't see the true Foundation, or he leads them from it: No Foundation appears true to them only Drowne's; if they are to be judged by their Practice; and so it is no Wonder that a Church of Christ striving to obey Christ's Order in Imitation of the Apostolic Church, should appear to them to be built short of the true Foundation. The two Churches have two Foundations, it is evident and very different: The Church Mr. Sandeman belongs to, is gathered by the Influence of the Gospel on the Minds of the Members, and is built on Jesus Christ, and so has the Rock of Ages for its Foundation; Mr. Drowne's Church is gathered by feigned Words, and is built upon himself, and so has him and his Experiences, Feelings, and Frames for its Foundation. It is evident to such as know the Practice of said Drowne's Church, that the Members of it have had their Eyes blinded by the God of this World; for in judging, they have followed Drowne's Advice, in Opposition to Christ's Command; and their said Performance shews that they are still in the Smoke of the bottomless Pit mentioned, Rev. 9. 1. 2. 3. How many Locusts they have I can't tell, but there is no Room to scruple their having one, and their Cry they make against Truth, shews they are tormented with the Fifth Vial, Rev. 16. 10. 11. for it falls on the Seat of their Beast. Published in Behalf of the Truth too long neglected.
