Allen Yellow Jackets Spill S. C. State Bulldogs, 19-6
COLUMBIA, S. C. - The Allen University Yellow Jackets scored twice in the first, and again in the fourth quarter to turn back a heavy but green eleven from South Carolina State College 19-6 here Saturday before a sunbaked crowd of 3,000.
Two flashy native South Carolina halfbacks with some devastating assists from lady luck sparked the Yellow Jackets to their second victory of the season. Fred Morgan, junior halfback from Easley, and Wilson Bickley, senior halfback from Lexington, were the workhorses for the victors.
Midway of the first quarter Allen got the first of several breaks slated to come her way. Bickley returned a short punt to the 30 yard line of the Bulldogs. Morgan dashed to the 20 for a first down. Morgan and Bickley alternated on running plays to set the stage for the first score on the two yard line of State College. James White, junior fullback from Ocean City, Maryland plunged over for the TD - White missed the point after the touchdown.
Late in the first quarter lady luck smiled on the Yellow Jackets again. Dick Arrington, State fullback, attempted to punt out from the six yard line but his effort fell short on his own 30. State was penalized 15 yards for holding to give Allen possession on the 15. Bickley carried to the two and Morgan lunged over for the second score. White ran for the pat. to end the halftime 13-0.
South Carolina State's Quarterback, Harry Nelson, passed to John Moss from his own twenty to Allen's 32 yard line in the ebbing minutes of the first half for state's deepest penetration and second time across the 50 yard line in the half.
On the sixth play of the third quarter Harry Nelson electrified the fans with a pass to Alex Gardner, Orangeburg halfback, which went from State's 19 yard line for the only Bulldog score.
In the last quarter the Bulldogs went to the air in a desperate attempt to save the ballgame, only to see their hopes fade further when James Floyd, senior Yellow Jacket end, intercepted a pass on South Carolina's 18 tossed by Leo Pendar, Bulldog substitute quarterback. Moses Goodwin, freshman left half, carried the ball to the 2 yard line after the Bulldogs had received a 15 yard penalty. Ernest Jones, fullback, scored the last tally from the 2 yard line. Willie Simon, Allen quarterback, missed the point after touchdown.
