BOSTON, March 25, 1771.

On Tuesday the 10th, his Majesty's Justices of the Superior Court for the Province waited upon His Excellency the Governor, with the following Address.

To His Excellency THOMAS HUTCHINSON Esq; Captain-General and Governor in Chief of His Majesty's Province of Massachusetts-Bay.

May it please your Excellency!

The Justices of the superior Court of Judicature wait upon you with their unfeigned Congratulations on the distinguishing Mark of the Royal Favour, in appointing your Excellency to the Chair of Government in this Province. Excuse us, Sir! if we feel some uneasiness at that Relation's being dissolved, by which we have been happily connected with you in that Department of the Law where you so long presided as Chief Justice, with Dignity to yourself and to the Court, and with so great Honour to the Province; but it alleviates our Misfortune, while we view you in the more important Character of the Father of your Country. We are too intimately acquainted, Sir, with your Sentiments of the importance of the Law, that impregnable Bulwark of English Liberty, to ask your Protection of it, your Sentiments are publickly known, and the Publick hath reaped the Advantages of them. Happy shall we always esteem ourselves, if we can contribute to the Ease of your Excellency's Administration. Be assured, SIR, that nothing can prevent our warmest Wishes, that those Abilities of Mind and that Integrity of heart which have so frequently derived the most salutary Advantages to this Province in the various publick Offices which you have sustained, may secure to you the Applause of all His Majesty's loyal Subjects under your Administration, the Smiles of the greatest and best of Sovereigns, and the all-important Approbation of the King of Kings.

His Excellency's Answer.

An Address so kind and affectionate from Gentlemen of your superiour Order and Character, does me great Honour. We have lived long together as Brethren in perfect Harmony, employed in the joint Service of our Country, no wonder we part with Reluctance. We may still contribute, although in different Characters, to the Advancement of the publick Weal. While you go on with your wonted Firmness, Integrity and Skill, dispensing Law and Justice; the great Supports of Government, I shall be attentive to your Protection and Encouragement to the utmost of my Power.
