VALUATION $297,500,000
Helena, Mont., July 28.-Complete reports have been received by the state board of equalization from the various county assessors, and with two exceptions, increases are shown, the losses being $313,403 in Deer Lodge and $92,130 in Sanders. Despite these losses in two of 28 counties a total gain of $17,546,495 is shown.
The assessed valuation of the state last year, including railroads, was $280,401,062, which, if the state board of equalization makes no change in the railroad assessment, would make the total for the state this year, in round figures, $297,500,000. Should the state board take no action along the line indicated, the tax levy will remain the same as at present, for the $300,000,000 mark must be reached before the automatic change provided by the Constitution becomes effective. However, there is a proposition in the form of a constitutional amendment to be voted upon this fall which would, if it prevails, nullify this provision.
Yellowstone county shows the greatest gain of all counties, its increased assessment being $1,937,525; Gallatin is next with $1,855,505; Cascade next with $1,749,095, and Fergus next with $1,715,660.
The chief gain is shown in farm lands and city property. In fact, the feature of the reports of the assessors is the agricultural development of the state.
