Full Text

Sitka is undoubtedly no different than any other small town in listening to and passing on rumors. If anyone should attempt to track down and verify things he hears in an average day he'd have a full time job on his hands, and after an exhausting day end up in a blind alley. During the war many people were convinced that rumors were started by enemy agents—for example, the day the taxis took load after load of people out the road because they had been reliably informed that a Jap attack had been set for two o'clock that afternoon.

Now that the war is over, there are just as many rumors, varying only in content. No one knows where they start and once started how they increase in detail and color so rapidly. An interesting study for any one with the time and energy to devote to it, but an exhausting hazard for the poor newswriter.
