Full Text
Extract of a letter from an eminent Brewer in London.
"We have erected a steam-engine at our brewhouse, by which we grind 250 quarters of malt per day, and pump up 1200 barrels of water per hour, from a well communicating with the Thames, and generally perform all the operations for which our horses were employed--consuming only 9 bushels of coals in 12 hours, and the engine entirely managed by one man and a boy. The first expense is heavy, but we find after three months trial it answers our most sanguine hopes--Several are already erected in this city, and many more are preparing, which will materially lessen the demand for horses, and prove a public as well as a private benefit."
