The landed interest of New-England, will & must govern. It may be deceived, it may be cheated for a while: but it will inevitably prefer a frugal to an expensive administration of our public concerns. At the time of the impost, the mercantile interest of Providence was notoriously anti-federal. The army was starving, and there was not a cent in the treasury. The merchants of that town had their vessels at sea, and they refused the impost. No town in the Union was more obstinate in its anti-federalism; and if a miracle had not saved this country, the opposition of those zealous federalists of modern growth would have ruined it. The leading characters had not then begun their peculations in the public certificates.—The Farmers now penetrate the mystery.
There is not a town in all New-England that has ventured to remonstrate against a single act of Mr. Jefferson's policy. The opposition is confined to a few newspapers; and will last no longer than the deception remains which their falsehoods have disseminated. There was not a vote in all this quarter for President Jefferson. The Republicans have since gained Rhode-Island completely, and probably Vermont. A large majority in this State indirectly approve of every measure he has taken. In ten different sessions of our respective Legislatures, since his administration commenced, not a murmur has escaped one of them.
We congratulate our friends at the southward on the prospect before us; and on the growth of Republicanism in New-England. N. B. Probably the republican majority in Rhode-Island will be greater this year, than it has been on any former occasion.
