MIAMI, Dec. 2.-National Airlines announced today a reduction of 40 per cent in air freight rates for the benefit of Florida fruit and vegetable growers.
The new low cost for air shipment is estimated to add many thousands of dollars in profits for Florida's winter crops. Fruit and vegetables will hit the northern markets in prime condition, "tree ripe," without undergoing freeze methods.
The reduced rates are strictly "one way," applicable only to northbound shipments. National serves principal cities of 10 other states from 15 cities in Florida. Principal shipping points for northbound flights are Miami, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Jacksonville, Tallahassee and Pensacola. NAL routes extend west to the Mississippi River, north to Philadelphia and New York City.
National's action gives Florida growers and shippers a reduction to 12 cents per ton mile from the prevailing rate of 20 cents per ton mile. A dollar-and-cents example is the new rate of $6.81 per 100 pounds from Miami to New York, compared with the former charge, $11.35.
