GAY YOUNG MAN'S "MOCK WED-
DING TOUR" ENDS IN THE
LATAH COUNTY BASTILE

What is claimed to be an attempted violation of the Mann "white slave" law came to a dramatic close today when the alleged "gay Lothario" was given six months in the county jail, a $300 fine and a severe lecture by Probate Judge Nelson, who voiced his regret that he could not send the defendant to the penitentiary.

Earl M. Williams, of Spokane, is the young man who is alleged to have planned to take a Moscow high school girl to Spokane, Seattle, Portland and California on a "mock wedding tour."

The evidence brought out at the trial of Williams today showed that he had corresponded with a Moscow high school girl whose name is withheld and asked her to meet him at Colfax.

They had never met but he described himself and his clothing so there could be no mistake. He outlined a trip to Spokane where they would stay with friends and then go to other cities and the south. He announced he would have clothing for her.

The officers were notified and arranged with the girl to meet Williams. She went to Colfax and found Williams waiting as he said he would.

She addressed him, asking if he was E. M. Williams and gave her name.

Williams took her grip and her arm and accompanied her to a Colfax hotel where he registered as "E. M. Smith and wife" and, securing the keys, started for the room assigned them.

Charles Summerfield, deputy sheriff of Latah county; and deputy sheriff of Whitman county, who had followed the couple from the depot, arrested Williams just as they entered the room.

Williams was brought to Moscow and entered a plea of guilty to a charge of "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" and received the sentence and the lecture at once. He began serving his sentence.

Williams' father was formerly a resident of Bovill but is now conducting a hotel in Spokane. Williams gave his age as 27 years. He is married but says his wife deserted him. He carried his marriage license with him and had it in his possession when arrested.
