CWA In State Forced To Hold Up Because Funds Are Running Low
Daily Dispatch Bureau In the Sir Walter Hotel,
BY J. C. BASKERVILL.
Raleigh, Jan. 23—Not so many work projects are being approved by the Civil Works Administration here now as formerly, since only enough projects to provide for replacement work for those completing projects are now being approved, it was announced today by Mrs. Thomas O'Berry. State CWA administrator.
For recent orders from Harry Hopkins, CWA administrator in Washington, have instructed all State CWA heads to approve only replacement projects to provide employment for those that would otherwise become idle as projects already under way are completed.
A total of only 19 new projects, providing jobs for 501 persons with a total payroll of $72,320 but at a total estimated cost of $126,101 had been approved up to this morning. A similar list of new projects was expected to be approved by this afternoon.
The largest project on this list was one in Union county that should make Dr. James M. Parrott of the State Board of Health smile in delight and strike terror into the hearts of the next generation of typhoid-carrying house flies—the construction of 3,200 sanitary privies in the county. This project will give employment to 217 men and provide a payroll of $32,170. The total estimated cost is $64,333.
Another project in this list, in Cumberland county, for cleaning out a canal in Gray's Creek township, will give employment to 42 men with a payroll of $4,781, at an estimated total cost of $5,321.
Among the other projects in this list are one in Robeson county, one in Lincoln county, five in Carteret, four in Alleghany, one in Lee, two in Moore and one each in Washington, Forsyth and Davis counties.
