The election of Representatives for the ensuing six months, to the General Assembly of this state was warmly contested in many of the towns. In this town the meeting was held at 10 o'clock, A. M. Hon. RICHARD JACKSON, was unanimously chosen Moderator. After the reading of the warrant calling the meeting, a number of gentlemen propounded at the last meeting, were admitted as freemen, and several others were propounded to be admitted at the next meeting.
EDWARD C. CARRINGTON, was honored for first Representative and unanimously elected, Caleb Earle declined. [Gov. Earle rose when General Carrington was nominated, and tendered his thanks to the freemen of the town for the support which had been given him at the two last elections and requested not to be considered a candidate for re-election.] JOSEPH L. TILLINGHAST was unanimously re-elected second Representative. For third Representative STANFORD NEWELL, (the former incumbent,) WHEELER MARTIN, JOHN WHIPPLE and ZACHARIAH ALLEN, were nominated. Mr. WHIPPLE declined being a candidate. On counting the ballots, they were as follows; for Newell 55; Martin 40. Allen 27; Scattering 7. There being no choice a second ballot was about to be taken, when WILLIAM E. Richmond, stated to the Moderator, that it had been asserted, that Mr. Allen would not serve if elected, which was a mistake. He believed he had authority to say, that he would serve if elected. On the second ballot the votes stood for ALLEN 50; NEWELL 30; MARTIN 29; and Mr. ALLEN, was accordingly elected. LEMUEL H. ARNOLD was nominated for fourth Representative and unanimously chosen.
A letter was read from WALTER R. DANFORTH, Esq. tendering his resignation as a member of the Town Council, which was accepted. Hon. STEPHEN BRANCH was elected to fill the vacancy.
A resolution was presented for appointing a committee to prepare a code of Regulations for the Dexter Asylum and to procure a suitable person to take charge of that establishment. An interesting Report was also received from the building committee of the same, which we should have published if our limits permitted.
Considerable municipal business was transacted which we shall notice hereafter.
Two hundred and twenty-one votes were given for Messrs. Burges and Pearce.
We learn from Warwick that Messrs. FRANCIS and ARNOLD were re-elected Representatives, and that JOHN R. WATERMAN was elected in place of THOMAS HOLDEN, by a majority of three votes, and that JOHN WESTCOTT was elected in place of THOMAS REMINGTON, resigned.
In Cranston, GEORGE BURTON and GORTON ARNOLD.
Smithfield has chosen ARNOLD SPEAR (vice N. B. SPRAGUE resigned) and STEPHEN STEERE.
North-Providence, BARNEY MERRY, and WILLIAM WHIPPLE.
