Of the four airplanes which on August 16 took off from San Francisco in great race to the Hawaiian Islands, only two reached their destination. The other two are still lost to the world, as nothing has been seen or heard of them since they left the California coast. A bird plane, which on last Thursday went in search of the lost ones, has also been lost at sea.
The three aircraft carried a total of seven persons, one of them being a girl, Miss Mildred Doran, who was making the flight as a passenger in the airplane named for her. The ocean lane between San Francisco and Honolulu has been carefully searched by the Pacific fleet of the Navy and by merchant vessels traversing it, but no trace has yet been found of the missing aviators.
As a result of the race's unfortunate outcome, high officials of the Federal government are considering the enforcement of restrictions against the use of land planes over the sea.
