If any thing can be gratifying to the friends of Reform, in this State, it is to see how favorably the nomination of the old farmer of Lamoille is received by the people, and with what disgust they look upon the junto pretensions of the great WOOL SPECULATOR. The portion of the whig party who are truly, as they profess to be, democratic, have not the least idea of voting for one of the bluest federalists in this or any other State. A candidate, placed before the people by intrigue, caucussing and maneuvering, is not just such an one as the sturdy farmers of the hills choose to vote for. And such a candidate! Pray tell us what are Col. Paine's recommendations to the Gubernatorial chair of Vermont? What are they? What has he done, except speculate out of the farmer's wool, and give the elite of the federal party champaign dinners? Show us what he has been except a grinder of the face of the poor, a task-master, and a heartless speculator. We ask again, what claim has this Col. Paine upon the people of this State? He has as little sympathy with their hopes, their fears, their wishes, their hard hands and honest hearts as the Autocrat of the Russias has with his wretched and miserable serfs. Charles Paine a man of the people! bah! The bare thought of the thing is perfectly ridiculous. He has not now, he never had, a particle of sympathy with the bone and sinew of the State. And yet this is the man that a set of old federalists have selected, from one of their old blue families, to be Governor of the farmers of the State!
