The big folding doors that divide the clubroom were none too strong to stem the tide that swarmed up against them in efforts to get at the ballot boxes. It was a hard job to get Johnny Troy, aged 11, who had already been elected King, into a corner of the room.
"Sure, I'll tell yuh the news," volunteered Johnny. "But yuh wants tuh get it straight from dis King that some guy's goin' to get de stuffin' slicked outer him to-morrer. I seen him shovin' chips in de hat of de guy dat wuz me rival tuh beat th' band. Scuse me, mister, dere he goes now."
Johnny's partner, the Queen, is May Collins of 72 Greenwich street. The last seen of May she was trying with a victor's generosity to comfort little Eleanor O'Keefe, who was all curled up in a corner of the room drowning the pangs of defeat in tears.
On the last day of the month Battery Park is to be turned over to the youngsters of the First Assembly district and there will be an all day dance with the King and Queen presiding. Ice cream and cakes and lemonade to fill 500 youngsters will be served and there will be four big hand organs to furnish the music.
