NEGRO ALMOST BURNS
WITH SERVANT HOUSE

When Ben Campbell, a negro servant, awoke about 8 o'clock yesterday morning he found his room in flames. Nearly suffocated, the negro escaped with his face and hands painfully burned and the hair on his head singed.

The negro was employed by L. Campbell, 1611 Avenue B, and occupied a room in the combined barn and servant house in the rear of the dwelling. The barn was damaged to the extent of $200 before the flames were extinguished by the firemen, who responded to the alarm.

The negro had gotten up early Sunday morning and made a roaring fire in the stove. He afterwards returned to bed and went to sleep. He awoke later to find himself in the midst of a burning building. In his haste to escape, the negro does not remember whether he leaped from the second story window or fell headlong down the stairway.
