Extract of a letter from Francis Douglass, Esq. Editor of the Portland Argus.
PORTLAND, AUG. 6.
"The robbery appears to have been concerted by the notorious Daniel Manly of this town, about 12 months since—his caution, characteristic of the man, led him to reveal it to one person only, Capt. Benjamin Roff, a relation. Circumstances in their nature very trivial, placed suspicion on Manly, and on Monday last he was arrested, and occasionally has been under examination ever since. Yesterday, by reason of a certain piece of canvass and a bag that were found, suspicion rested on Roff as an accomplice—this having been made known to him, his guilt was apparent, and for fear of the result, he immediately made a disclosure to the Bank Directors, with a promise to restore the whole property stolen. Accompanied by an officer and the Directors, they went in pursuit of the $195,000 in bills, but failed in obtaining them, as Manly probably had not given him correct information—he then proceeded for that which he had himself hid, $1600 in specie, and found it. This morning about sunrise, with two Directors, they went on further pursuit at the lower part of the town, where he again failed, from either deception in his accomplice, or misdirection. He then said (as we are informed) that "Manly had deceived him"—and with pretence of the necessity of stepping aside from those with him, for natural purposes, he seized the opportunity and with a pistol to his mouth dispatched himself on the spot. Proof now being doubtful against Manly, policy, dictated the importance of concealing this act from him, and the necessity of availing themselves (the Directors) of the best terms with him, as he alone knew where the deposit was made—this succeeded—and Manly has acknowledged all—accompanied them to the several places of his Bank deposits, and learn has restored all.—Thus are all gratified that the entire derangement in all concerns, more particularly that of the Bank, is in a fair way to a regular train."
"Capt. Roff was a sea captain, in very good circumstances; owned a fine farm about ten miles from town, and one quarter of a good brig. He has left a widow and 7 children to mourn his dreadful fate."
"Mr. Manly has been a West-India trader here for many years, and was in easy circumstances. His examination will be completed tomorrow; and it is expected he will be lodged in jail for trial in October next."
"The cash has all been recovered except 5 or 10 dollars. together with the large and small keys by which they entered the Bank:"

Event Details
Daniel Manly planned the Cumberland Bank robbery about 12 months prior, confiding only in relative Capt. Benjamin Roff. Manly arrested Monday last and examined. Roff implicated, confessed to directors, promised restoration. Pursuit recovered $1600 in specie hidden by Roff but failed for bills due to Manly's deception. Roff suicided during further search. Directors concealed suicide to get Manly to confess and reveal deposits, recovering all but minor amount.
