What is this article about?
A comparison of 1767 vital statistics shows Paris exceeding London in births by 2,768 and having 2,737 fewer deaths, leading to a net loss of 5,506 inhabitants for London. This is attributed to cheaper living costs encouraging matrimony in Paris and healthier air there, implying exhaustion of Britain's population to sustain London's disparity.

On a comparison of the annual Bills of LONDON & Paris for the year 1767, the Numbers for each of which places stand thus, viz.
Paris. London.
Births 19749 15980
Deaths 19875 22612
it appears that the births in Paris have exceeded those in London by 2768; while on the other hand the deaths in the latter have 2737 more than in the former. This makes a difference against London, in point of loss of Inhabitants, of 5506 persons; from whence, supposing both places to be pretty nearly equal in bigness, may be inferred, perhaps, to two things: 1st. from the number of births, that Matrimony is more encouraged in Paris, the common necessaries of Life, being in general cheaper there; secondly, that the air of Paris is probably much wholesomer than that of London; as notwithstanding the majority of births in the foregoing, the number of their deaths is so considerably less. From this last circumstance also in London, we may draw one melancholy inference, how much that country must be exhausted of Inhabitants, which is for the most part annually obliged to supply so great a disparity between the number of births & burials in its capital.
