Temperance Meeting

At a meeting held in the M. E. Church, in this place, on last Tuesday evening, the following resolution was offered by Rev. John Walls:

Resolved, That a committee of ladies be appointed to wait on the voters of Rockport and obtain pledges from said voters not to sign any petition for a permit to sell intoxicating drinks in Rockport, also a resolution to obtain a pledge from said voters, that they will use their efforts to have the present temperance law enforced, both of which were unanimously adopted.

The ladies being called upon, expressed themselves in favor of the cause and twelve of them gave in their names as being willing to proceed at once to the good work.

This plan, as we are informed has been agreed upon instead of entering upon a crusade against the liquor sellers by holding prayer meetings in the drug stores and whisky saloons. In this be the meaning of the move, it meets our hearty approbation. We are inclined to the opinion that much more good will result from such a course, than the manner in which the ladies of some other towns and cities are attempting to suppress intemperance. Drug stores and whisky shops are not proper places in which to hold religious meetings.
