TO BE MOVED
Postal Department Accepts Offer Made by Mohaupt of Quarters on Second Street Near Store There.
TO BUILD AT ONCE
New Fireproof Building to House Postal Business for Grand Rapids--Present Lease Expires Soon--Owners Would Not Renew--Other Offers.
The Grand Rapids post office will soon be moved, at least as soon as a new building can be erected in which to house the office and equipment. The new location is on Second street, in the middle of the block between the Acheson Tire & Battery station and the Consumer's Grocery. H. C. Mohaupt, who owns the site on which the office building will be located, was the successful bidder, and was notified on Monday that his bid had been accepted.
Mr. Mohaupt plans on erecting at once a new building. The building occupied by Wm. Newman as a shoe repair shop will be moved off, and a brick and tile structure, 46 by 70 feet in size, erected there. The new building will be entirely of fire proof construction, and especially built to serve as postal headquarters in the county seat. It is understood that the terms call for a lease for ten years if the new building is satisfactory when completed. It will be one story high steam heated from a furnace located in the basement of the Mohaupt block and with a concrete floored lobby.
The present postoffice quarters in the south part of the Itasca block, cannot be used longer for office room, as it is understood that the owners, the Merritts, who live in California, have decided not to renew their lease with the postal authorities. The lease expires on September first, and it is expected that the office will only be permitted to remain where it is until the new building can be completed.
The present office rental is $65 per month, but the lease was executed ten years ago, when prices in all lines were lower. It is understood that the postal authorities will pay nearly twice that amount for space in the new Mohaupt building when it is completed.
The owner of the building which houses a postoffice in towns like Grand Rapids not only furnishes the building, but all water, light and heat used, owns and furnishes the post office equipment, including lock boxes and desks, and must arrange the place in a manner to satisfy postal inspectors, who are quite particular.
Several other offers were made to

the postal authorities. One would have provided a building just south of the John Johnsen grocery store, and would have been a two story building, with the post office on the lower floor and offices on the second. Another offer was for a new building to be erected on Fourth street, between the Itasca County State bank and the Itasca Drug store. It is stated that the offer of Mr. Mohaupt was the lowest and most favorable received by the department.
