RAIDED AN ALLEGED GAMBLING DEN.
William and Ella Swiggett, Colored, Arrested on the Charge.
Last night Sergeants Massey and Welch and a squad of officers raided the house No. 230 Liberty street, in which various gambling games are said to be played. William and Ella Swiggett, colored, the tenants, were arrested.
William I. Fisher, colored, testified against them in the Municipal Court, this morning. He said that people went to Swiggett's house for the purpose of shooting "crap" and playing "poker." They did it almost every night in the week.
Several other witnesses were not inclined to say anything that would be injurious to the prisoners.
The charge against Ella was dismissed but William was held in $500 bail until tomorrow morning, in order that the case be further probed.
