The Forrest Divorce Case.—On Friday morning last, the State Senate, by a vote of 20 to 13, agreed to proceed to the consideration of this case, and the bill then passed the Committee of the Whole without a division. This is a significant comment upon the course which has been systematically pursued by a portion of the press to prejudice this case in the public mind. The papers alluded to, do not know a word of the testimony which is now familiar to every member of the State Senate, the majority of whom, in view of the facts sworn to before legal tribunals, (where the opposite party were repeatedly summoned to appear and examine the witnesses.) have doubtless given the vote to which we have referred. The same papers, in order the more effectually to injure Mr. Forrest, and the body of numerous warm and disinterested friends, appeal to the public sympathy by alluding to an alleged attempt making to injure an unprotected woman. A very short time will convince all these journals, as well as all their readers, that any attempt like this is as unjust to Mr Forrest as it is to those who have espoused his cause, after a full examination of the facts as they are sworn to, confirmed, and almost confessed in the evidence. No one could have been more reluctant to make the appeal to the Legislature than Mr. Forrest, and the world will wonder that he was so when it comes to see everything. A strange desire to condemn the case before hand having been manifested by the press, and to render it the subject of the most cruel reflections and calumnies upon an honest and upright man, must be an excuse for referring to it once more in these columns.—Phil. Penn.
