The following extract of a letter from Capt. Taylor, who sailed from this port sometime in June last, to his correspondent here, dated at St. Thomas's, the 21st ult. will give our readers some idea of the hurricane experienced there : "Wednesday night, the 24th of August, about 12 o'clock, a hurricane came on ; and about one o'clock in the morning I parted with my small anchor ; the wind then was about N. E. and at three, began to drift away with my best bower : the gale increasing, at nine was obliged to cut away my best bower cable, the wind shifting round to E. S. E. and S. E. and at half past nine cut away my mainmast, and at the same time my foremast blew away by the main force of the wind about four feet below the bounds, and then there was seven feet of water in the hold ; the gale still increasing. I saved nothing but the wreck, as the sea run so high. I am not alone, as there are ten brigs and one ship in this harbour in distress, some without masts, and others without anchors, or cables, and three drove ashore. Yesterday I had accounts from St. Croix, that there was not a vessel left there but what went ashore or drove to sea --There is not a day but we see wrecks going to leeward. The generality of people here think it the severest hurricane they can remember."
