A DIFFERENT TUNE.
The Oregonian says that any attempt to suppress the evils of suffrage by the intervention of federal force would bring greater evils. "This," it says, "is the situation, as every intelligent republican in the North understands it, though it does not get into the republican platform in just these terms." This is what might be called a very liberal translation of the republican platform, and is a translation that completely changes the sense of the original. This desire on the part of the Oregonian to re-edit the force bill plank of the republican platform is brought about by its realizing sense that some such interpretation is necessary in order to allay the apprehension of the intelligent voter, both republican and democrat, north and south, over such an unwarranted extension of federal authority.
