Extract of a letter from a gentleman residing near the waters of the Big Beaver, Trumbull county, state of Ohio, to his friend in Bridge town N. Jersey.

" The particular spot I have selected for my residence, is in Trumbull county, state of Ohio, about 100 miles west by north of Pittsburgh and 60 south west of Presque Isle, on a branch of Mahoning, which is the western branch of Big Beaver, which joins the Ohio at M'Intosh's, thirty below Pittsburgh. This stream is navigable for large boats, till within fourteen miles and from what I can learn, will, in time, be extended to Mill seat. The Cuyahoga river is within five miles of my place, and empties into lake Erie in about thirty ; at the mouth of which there is a city laid out, with flattering prospects of markets.—The land is generally very rich, the soil is loam, and, when tilled, is black and very light, producing the finest wheat, Indian corn, &c. and for timothy, clover and other grass, I think exceeds any country I have ever seen. The timber is so generally raised, that it requires particular description. It is commonly large, straight and free to split.—There are white and red oaks, but a great deal of poplar, chestnut, black and white walnut, shellbark, hickory, beech, sugar maple, common maple, and cucumber trees, all mixed together & growing luxuriantly. The land is generally free from stone on the surface. but in the bottoms and sides of brooks, there is plenty of free stone excellent for building.— They are chiefly in flags of different thicknesses. The springs and brooks afford very clear, good water: and there is every reason to believe the country is healthy. The inhabitants who have lived in the township for five years, have been very healthy. This part is settling chiefly by people from the eastward, and are generally orderly, and well informed, and many of them pious, but I have reason to hope, that there will soon be members enough to form a church; and now is a favorable time for those who wish such a situation, to come, there being a large quantity of excellent land for sale in the neighbourhood.

" I have given some broken sketches of my favorite country ; and so generally pleased are those that see it, that about 1500 families have come into the country in about five years, and abundance more are coming, but still there is room sufficient. The receipt of your letter gave me pleasure, from the consideration that perhaps God will dispose numbers to come to this fine land, and raise houses of prayer on places lately trod by wild beasts and savage Indians."
