A Word on Political Organization.
As stated in our last number, the Whig and Antimasonic party in Somerset county is entirely without organization, and we call their attention to the subject again at this time, while the political elements are calm, in order that the defect may be speedily remedied. Though our opponents did not succeed at the late election in electing any of their candidates, yet a number of our own men were disappointed, and in some instances the contest was chiefly amongst themselves. We achieved a victory, it is true, but it was too dearly bought, and our own determination is, so far as our influence may extend, to guard against similar occurrences in future.
We want an efficient County Committee in the first place, next committees of vigilance in every election district, and then a regularly formed delegate county ticket. In this way, and in this way alone, can we effect a thorough organization of the party—and after that shall have been accomplished, if there be any who will raise or encourage opposition, let them be treated as deserters and turned over to the enemy.
