Havana To Name Famed Landmark After Key West
Francisco Square to Bear Name of City for Honors Shown.
In recognition of the effort being put forth by the people of Key West to make successful the celebration of Jose Marti Week, which will open here Easter Sunday, the city council of Havana, Cuba, intends to change name of Francisco Square, one of the Cuban capital's oldest landmarks, to "Key West Square".
"It is the unanimous desire of the people of Cuba, our government officials and the council of Havana that signal recognition be given the city of Key West for its splendid effort to increase the fires of democracy by use of the name of Jose Marti," a member of the council said.
"Never a statesman; never a diplomat; never a soldier; always half sick from the trials he had undergone, Marti, the little man whose head seemed too large for his body, was inspired by a spark that must have been divine. His writings and words of democracy will live forever as an inspiration that freedom and liberty are and always shall be—immortal".
The Cuban school ship, Patria will arrive in Key West Naval Base at 8 a.m. Sunday to disembark the Cuban band, which consists of two officers, 12 warrant officers and 40 enlisted men. The band will take part in the observance of Marti Week.
The Patria will not stay in port during the week, according to word received today at the Naval base. She will put off for Havana right after disembarking the band.
