POETRY.

FROM THE NEW YORK STATESMAN, OF DEC. 31, 1827.

THOUGHTS ON THE CLOSE OF THE YEAR.

A Year has fled!
And time has numbered with the dead
Hearts lov'd and dear.
Wringing full many a tear
Above their clay-cold bed.

As flowers of Spring
Some fell in bud and blossoming,
Some with grey hairs,
And brows o'ercast by pains and cares.
Courted Death's withering

With dull delay
Some saw life's stream slow ebb away,
While some the stroke
That rent yon fire-scathed oak
Fell quickly, than they.

A parent's wail
Still floats upon the passing gale
And childhood weeps,
With tearful eyes, the sire who sleeps
Beneath that marble pale

Then what is life?
A scene with grief and anguish rife,
An infant's moan,
A funeral knell, a saddening tone.
And this shall of life.
