LIKE DEATH CITIES
JERUSALEM, July 13.—Nablus, the ancient Samaritan center 30 miles north of here, and other towns in the Holy Land appear like cities of the dead as the result of the earthquake last Monday.
Latest dispatches of an official nature place the dead in Palestine at more than 150; in Transjordania at 100 with 500 injured. Unofficial figures estimate the total dead at 1,000.
No Americans and no Europeans are reported among the victims.
Scarcely a house in the old section of the town escaped. Some collapsed entirely.
The usually busy streets are deserted save for an occasional figure salvaging bedding and placing it on the backs of camels or donkeys to take to the camps outside of the town where the inhabitants are collected in pathetic groups.
