Full Text

The following letter from Capt. Stearns of the 4th Vt. Regt. renders harmless the report which had obtained circulation, reflecting upon the character of the parties named therein :

CAMP GRIFFIN. VA., Oct. 24th, 1861.

EDITOR OF THE PHOENIX: I request the privilege of contradicting, through the columns of your paper, the story which has become current in some parts of Windham County that M. H. TWITCHELL. and LEROY G. KELLOGG, members of Company I, 4th Vermont Regiment, were implicated in the late mail robbery at Camp Advance. I take pleasure in stating that the above named gentlemen were in no way connected with the affair—have neither been suspected, arrested nor shot: but are now, as they ever have been since entering Camp, performing their customary routine of duty with unimpeachable faithfulness and integrity. Col. Stoughton wishes also to say that the thief was traced out of his regiment.

L. A. STEARNS
Capt. Co. I, 4th Vt. Reg.
