Rutland House, the residence of Mr. E. Edge, some three miles from Carlow, was destroyed by fire on June 13. The fire is believed to have arisen from the bursting of an oil lamp which had been left lighted in the back hall pending the return of some members of the family who were spending the evening with friends. The New Volunteer Fire Brigade from Carlow was quickly in attendance, but the water supply was short. The preservation of a wing of the inhabited portion and the removal of the furniture was all the salvage that could be effected.
