Full Text

Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Georgetown (S. C.) dated 15th August, 1806.

"I take the liberty to enclose you a notice of the Light House on North Island having been blown down. The gale by which this accident happened, was more severe than the one which took place in September, 1804 ; fortunately there was but little easting in the wind, for which circumstance the rice crops have received but little damage, the tide not rising higher than it frequently does with the springs.

"The crops on the upland have been considerably damaged, and the roads rendered almost impassable from the number of trees thrown across them. Our town suffered but little damage; the frame of a store, with the roof of a house, just raised and inclosed, was thrown down, and most of the fences with a number of trees, which served the double purpose of ornament and shade, were thrown down in different directions, about the streets."
