Full Text

Paris, May 22. His Majesty has nominated the Prelates who are to form the Commission for judging all Differences and Controversies pertaining to Religion. They are the Cardinal de Tencin lately returned from his Archbishopric, but at present dangerously ill, the Archbishop of Paris, the Archbishop of Saumur, the Bishop of Sens, and the late Bishop Mirepoix. Of the Magistrates who are to be joint Members with the Prelates, only the Chancellor and first President of the Chamber of Accounts are as yet appointed. The Prelates have indeed remonstrated against any Lay-Coadjutors as an Impropriety at least, if not an Indignity to the Priesthood, and that Religion being the End of the Institution, it ought to be absolutely lodged with Ecclesiastics only. What Reception this Remonstrance has met with at Versailles is unknown.
