A MURDERER KILLED.—We mentioned the fact last week that Captain Hersey had shot Mrs. Addington (formerly his wife) at Truckee. Hersey had traced his wife (they had been separated some years) and demanded that she should return and live with him again, and on her refusing, he shot her with a revolver, killing her. The following dispatch tells what followed: "A party went out in pursuit of Hersey, the man who shot his wife at Sierra Valley a few days ago, and came upon him about eight miles west of Loyalton. Dr. Webber, one of the pursuing party, caught sight of him first and covered him with his rifle. Hersey then cried out: 'Don't shoot; I will surrender.' Dr. Webber then told him to throw down the weapons he carried, but instead of doing this he jumped behind a large boulder and fired upon Webber. One of the shots with which the gun was charged struck him in the left hand and another under the left eye, and it is feared he will lose it. Another shot took effect in the breast of another of the party. Some one of the party then shot Hersey with a Henry rifle, the ball taking effect in the breast, killing him instantly. He was buried on the spot where he fell.—Placer Herald, 7th.

Since the foregoing was in type, we learn from a gentleman of Gold Hill, who arrived at Sierra Valley shortly after the above happened, that it was not old Dr. Webber who was shot, but young Dr. Joe Webber. It seems that Webber, a Mr. Bell and Rev. L. Case, formerly of Gold Hill, went out after Hersey, and as soon as the latter shot Webber, Bell took to his heels and 'ran like a white-head,' exclaiming as he ran, 'I surrender, Mr. Injun!!' Brother Case, who went out as a peace maker, and, Quaker-like, had no arms, also turned and ran after Bell, who kept up his speed like a hare. Case wanted to get Bell's gun to go to the relief of Webber, as he feared Hersey might kill him. It was 'nip and tuck' between Bell and Case through chaparral, and Case finding Bell's legs carried him too fast, and as moral suasion failed to cause him to stop, he was suddenly tempted by the devil to give vent to his feelings, and sung out to Bell: 'Stop! you d-d s-n of a b-h! and give me that gun!' This terrible expletive scared Bell still worse, and he ran like a wild Indian, and brother Case lost sight of him, so he returned and helped Dr. Webber home. Bell afterwards explained that he thought it was Hersey who was following him, and he felt the more convinced of it when he heard the command to give up the gun, as he knew the preacher wouldn't swear. A second party went out afterwards, and in eight hours found Hersey and killed him, as he refused to surrender. (Brother Case, however, it must be confessed, is improving somewhat in his style of expletives since he has taken himself unto the mountains of Hepsidam. He should never forgive that runaway Bell for telling on him.)
