Wrestling has become a reality in Sidney high school. Under the guidance and teachings of Don Smading, John Grimstad and Bob Anderson local students now have the opportunity to participate in this body building sport. Long an important phase in many Montana schools wrestling was first introduced here this year.
Like track, wrestling is a sport for the individual. During each match the only help the 'grappler receives from his teammates are their cheers of encouragement.
Last Saturday afternoon the Glendive canvas men provided the first competition for the locals and emerged the winners by a 40-15 score. The Dawson County team is one of the better ones in the state.
Some interesting and fast action was witnessed by a sparse crowd as six out of ten matches were decided by falls.
In the 95 pound class Gordon Henderson was pinned by Dawson's Weidner in 18 seconds of the first. LeRoy Rosaaen won by default as Glendive failed to enter the 103 class. Harvey Benson of Sidney won by default as Woods was unable to continue the match. Benson had a 2-0 lead at the time of injury.
With no competition offered, Wetsch of Glendive won by default in the 120 pound class. Boyd Erickson of Sidney was pinned in 55 seconds by Freistone weighing 127. In another pin Harold Sax lost in 1:54 to 133 pound Jones of Glendive.
At 138 pounds Lowell Larson lost a decision to Holzworth. The match between Zane Gray and Dawson's Kearns went three periods before the Glendive boy won in a fall. Mike Lowe was pinned at 1:50 of second period by Bos of Glendive.
In the 165 pound class Gene Foss and Hass of Glendive fought to a 4-4 draw. Sidney's Gordon Myron won a decision over Rogers in the 177 pound weight. In the final match Jim Dick of Sidney was pinned in 1:53 of the second period by Squires. Both wrestlers weighed 226 pounds.
Six exhibition matches were also fought.
Howard Leland of Sidney lost a decision to Dye of Dawson and Dick Haugen of Sidney was decisioned by Weidner of Dawson. Ted Goss of Sidney pinned Beier of Dawson in :36 of the first period and Roger Marker pinned Glendive's Wriggs at 1:10.
In two matches between Sidney boys Jim Gullikson pinned Marvin Kilen at 1:40 of second and Arnie Hanson pinned Jon Peterson in the same time.
