Full Text
This timid family opponent—The Augusta Constitutionalist is one of the most decided Loco Foco papers in the South, and there are not many equal to it in ability. Its editor, however, occasionally differs from his brethren, by venturing to do justice to an opponent. He does so in the following paragraph, introductory to the reply recently given by Mr. Clay, to Mendenhall, the Indiana Abolitionist:
"Having been informed that many of our subscribers would be gratified to see the speech of Mr. Clay, on abolition, in our columns, we have with pleasure complied with this desire. Our opposition to Mr. Clay's political aspirations, is not of late date; but this opposition never blinded us to the eminent talents of that distinguished citizen, and to the excellent things he may have done or said.—There is in the speech now published, many passages we admire and approve, which are told with feeling and eloquence. All the harm we wish Mr. Clay is, that he would give us the opportunity to praise him on the other great topics of the day, as we are inclined to do on the subject now before us."
