On Monday evening his Excellency Sir Henry Clinton, K. B. &c. &c. &c. accompanied by Major General Daniel Jones, his Excellency Major General Tryon, and Major General Valentine Jones, with their several suites, reviewed the troops in the vicinity of King's bridge, passing along the lines to Fort Independence, and from thence to Captain Emmerick's quarters.
Where was presented a sham fight, by firing from within a house, to defend it against many fierce attacks made upon it; in two impetuous attacks a constant firing was kept up; the conduct of this exhibition, with the animated and truly military appearance of Emmerick's men, met with the approbation of the Generals, who, after reconnoitering the various ground, and examining the redoubts, which had been constructed by order of his Excellency Sir William Howe, reviewed the Provincial forces, expressing much satisfaction at their neat appointment, and very soldierly behaviour.
