The attendance at the performance of "The Life of an Actress" by the Home Dramatic Club on New Year's day and evening was very large, and the number present was not the least gratifying feature of the entertainments, for the audiences in either case were composed mainly of people who know what good acting is and whose plaudits are worth having; and when it is announced in addition that the applause was not infrequent nor long between, the reader will at once understand that there is little more of a general nature that needs to be said.
The verdict of the people present was that the performance was a success, or they would not so have testified by their repeated demonstrations; Lindsay, Cummings, Spencer and Young rarely appear to better advantage, and the ladies were certainly all that could be desired; but it is only fair to say that the chief honors of the occasion were carried off by Mr. H. M. Wells, who, in his personation of the old and seedy French actor, evinced not only a knowledge of the means by which language and dressing are made most effective, but an insight into the philosophy of the part, coupled with an ability to place his conception clearly before the audience, such as pertain only to the genuine actor His dialect was as nearly perfect as possible; the assimilation of the part with its surroundings was really good, and the gentleman is fairly entitled to enter the professional arena any time he may desire to do so. It may safely be stated that the club scored another red letter record.
